Community Benefit

“On average an uninsured Missourian visits a hospital emergency department every minute, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Hospitals provide a lifeline to the uninsured and underinsured. Hospitals’ annual contributions to providing this care and supporting other programs is known as ‘community benefit.’ Although this is not the only way hospitals support their communities, it is a powerful reflection of their commitment.”

– Missouri Hospital Association, Community Investment Report, 2016

Each year, Community Hospital - Fairfax compiles an in depth report illustrating its benefit to our community. Charity care, unreimbursed care, scholarships and loans, charitable giving, employee volunteer hours and community wellness screening are just a few of the ways Community Hospital - Fairfax makes a positive impact on the health of our community.

Back to School Fair

Children living in poverty exceed the county average of all people in poverty. 17% of Atchison County and 22% of Holt County children live in poverty.

To assist those children and their families with the expense of a new school year, Community Hospital – Fairfax partners with Community Services in both counties to host the annual Back to School Fair. The fair is tailored to families in need and allows local students to receive free school supplies prior to the start of the school year. Community Hospital – Fairfax organizes the collection of funds from local businesses and individuals and purchases the supplies. In addition, children are treated to sessions on healthy eating and good habits for a healthy school year and multiple booths where they and their families could learn about services available to them. 100 children filled backpacks with needed school supplies in 2016.

Health and Wellness Screenings

Educating the community about their health through free screenings and health information is one way Community Hospital – Fairfax works to increase the health and wellness of our community.

Community Events and Free Screenings Include:

  • Heart Health Screenings each February
  • Prostate Screening
  • Women's and Kids Health Events
  • Fall Risk Assessments each October

Pediatric Orientation

Each spring, Community Hospital – Fairfax hosts Pediatric Orientation for area elementary students. Energetic first graders from around the community are invited for an inside look at CH-F. They take a tour of the hospital and role play what it might be like to be a patient. During their role-playing time they are visited by doctors, nurses, and technicians from Laboratory and Radiology. They also enjoy wheelchair rides and pushing the buttons of the hospital bed while a friend enjoys the ride.
