Friday, January 16, 2015, Community Hospital-Fairfax (CH-F) hosted 69 8th graders from the county at the 4th annual career day. Students enjoyed learning about the vast number of careers available in healthcare both clinical and non-clinical. Hospital employees informed students of the technical aspects of their career like years of education and licenses, but most enjoyed sharing about their passion for healthcare in a rural setting.
Hands on activities were a highlight of the day. Students practiced “scrubbing in” for surgery and took a tour of the laboratory and radiology. To give each student a taste of emergency medicine, the Atchison-Holt Ambulance Crew and CH-F nursing and respiratory care staff planned a mock code. With sirens blaring the ambulance pulled up to the ER and students were asked to respond just as hospital staff would.
Career Day is a partnership between Atchison County schools, the Atchison-Holt Ambulance District and hospital staff.
