Joint Program Up and Running at Community Hospital-Fairfax (CH-F)

In December of 2018, Community Hospital-Fairfax completed its first ever joint replacement. Roger Anderson, a Graham, Missouri native, chose Community Hospital-Fairfax (CH-F) for his knee replacement and had this to say about his experience.

“I was treated like a king while I was there and had the very best of care. I got along great with everything.”

Roger’s surgery was completed in early December. After a short stay at CH-F, he was able to return directly to his home where he lives alone. With physical therapy three times a week at CH-F’s Mound City location, Roger quickly progressed from using a walker to a cane to walking independently after two weeks. He was especially grateful to be driving so quickly after surgery.

Roger’s surgery was performed by Dr. Steven Kitchen. Dr. Kitchen is new to the hospital’s orthopedic program joining the medical staff as a specialist in July of 2018. Dr. Kitchen and Bryan Bredthauer M.D., Ortho Nebraska, make access to an orthopedic specialist a weekly occurrence at CH-F.

Joint replacements are a growing need in the population of the United States. By 2030, knee and hip replacements are expected to grow by over 170%.

“Starting a joint replacement program has been a long-time dream for this organization. We know this is a need for many in our community and we wanted to meet this need close to home. We are grateful for the community’s support as we work to grow this program,” commented Julie Jones, CEO at Community Hospital-Fairfax.

Joint replacements are only a part of the orthopedic services available to the community. Fractures, sprains, hand, knee and shoulder disorders as well as arthroscopic procedures are treated by the orthopedic specialists at Community Hospital-Fairfax. In addition, CH-F has physical and occupational therapists available at Fairfax, in Mound City and if needed, through home health.
