CH-F gives tips for a healthy holiday
For most people, Christmas celebrations
mean a lot of extra food and treats during the season. It is not uncommon to eat
more than one holiday dinner and more than your share of cookies and cake.
The dietary department at Community Hospital-Fairfax and Karen Wedlock, a Certified
Diabetes Educator work together to give patients the tools needed to live a healthy
lifestyle even during the holiday season. Wedlock gives the following reminders.
"Healthy tips for eating and entertaining during the holidays include choosing lower
fat items like raw veggies rather than chips for dips and using fruit in place of
'heavy' desserts.”
Wedlock also explains that portion control is key and to remember that you will
probably eat again in three to four hours.
Individuals with diabetes may want to take advantage of the hospital’s Diabetes
Self Management classes to learn about healthy eating choices. For more information
on the Diabetes Self Management classes in Mound City and Fairfax, contact Holt
County Outpatient Services at 660-442-5134 or Community Hospital-Fairfax at 660-686-2211.
USDA’s website features tips and shopping lists for a health-conscious holiday meal.
Suggestions include adding low-sodium broth or pan drippings
with the fat skimmed off instead of lard or butter for dressing or stuffing and
use herbs and spices and whole grain bread for added flavor. The website also recommends
eating a meal before going to a party where there will be snacks and finger foods
so that you are not tempted.
