Pulmonary Function Test
How do you prepare for a PFT?

This test measures vital capacity, inspiratory capacity, expiratory reserve volume, functional residual capacity, residual volume, total lung capacity, peak flow and tidal volume. Ages 13 and up are tested by our Respiratory Therapy. The test takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete and is available for both inpatients and outpatients. This test can indicate an obstructive or restrictive lung defect, such as asthma, bronchitis or emphysema.

Sleep Studies
Heartland Sleep Lab is contracted by CH-F to perform sleep studies on outpatients as ordered by their physician. Community Hospital-Fairfax staff will schedule a time and date with you and send a packet of instructions and questionnaire to the patient.

Things that can be diagnosed by a sleep study:

  • Sleep apnea

  • Obstructed airways

  • Reason for snoring

Your doctor may suggest a sleep study if you have symptoms/risk factors like:

  • Constant sleepiness

  • Waking up short of breath

  • Never feeling rested even after a full night's sleep

  • Obesity

Overnight Pulse Oximetry
This is a test to monitor oxygen saturation during your sleeping hours. A monitor is worn on your finger while you are sleeping. This test is done at home. After the monitor is returned to the hospital, a computer downloads the informational data and a report is sent to the ordering physician.
